What to Expect When You're 12 Weeks Pregnant
Congratulations! You have reached the 12th week of your pregnancy. By now, you have likely seen your doctor multiple times and have had at least one ultrasound to confirm your pregnancy and check on the development of your baby. You may be feeling a bit more comfortable with the changes that your body is going through and the prospect of becoming a parent. Here’s what you can expect when you’re 12 weeks pregnant.
First Trimester Symptoms
At 12 weeks pregnant, most of your first trimester symptoms should start to subside. Fatigue and morning sickness will likely be starting to taper off. You may find that you have more energy and that you’re able to do more activities than you were able to do in the early weeks of your pregnancy. You may also find that you’re more comfortable in your own skin and that you’re more excited about the pregnancy.
Belly Growth
Your body is going through a lot of changes during this time. Your belly will be getting bigger and will start to become more noticeable. You may find that you’re able to fit into some of your pre-pregnancy clothes, but you’ll likely need to start investing in some maternity clothes to accommodate your growing belly. You may also find that your breasts are getting larger and that your skin is becoming more sensitive.
Movement
At 12 weeks pregnant, you may start to feel your baby’s movements. These will be small flutters or bubbles in your abdomen. Some women don’t feel the baby’s movements until 18-20 weeks, so don’t be concerned if you don’t feel anything yet. As your pregnancy progresses, your baby’s movements will become more frequent and intense.
Ultrasound
At 12 weeks pregnant, you may have your second ultrasound. This is a great opportunity to get a glimpse of your baby and to check on its development. During this ultrasound, the technician will be able to measure the baby’s size and check its heartbeat. You may also be able to determine the sex of your baby, if you’d like to know ahead of time.
Baby Development
Your baby is growing rapidly and is now the size of a large plum. At 12 weeks pregnant, its eyes, ears, and limbs are all developing. Its facial features are becoming more defined and its organs are maturing. Your baby’s brain is also developing, and it is learning to recognize sounds and respond to them.
Preparing for Baby
As your baby’s due date approaches, it’s a good idea to start preparing for the arrival of your new bundle of joy. Start researching baby products and making a list of the essential items you’ll need. Start decorating the nursery and gathering supplies. You may also want to start reading up on parenting books and attending birthing classes.
Take Care of Yourself
Don’t forget to take care of yourself during this time. Make sure to get plenty of rest and eat a healthy, balanced diet. Make sure to take your prenatal vitamins and attend all of your doctor’s appointments. You may want to start exercising and doing prenatal yoga to help prepare your body for labor.
Enjoy the Journey
Being 12 weeks pregnant can be both exciting and overwhelming. Try to enjoy the journey and savor every moment. Remember that your body is going through a lot of changes and that you may not always feel your best. Take time for yourself and enjoy the amazing experience of being pregnant.
