How to Tell if Your Dog is Pregnant at Home
Knowing the Signs of Pregnancy
If you have a female dog, you may be wondering if she is pregnant. While it is best to take your dog to the vet to confirm her pregnancy, there are some signs you can look for at home to give you an indication. Knowing the signs of pregnancy in your dog can help you to make sure she is given the best care throughout her pregnancy.
Changes in Appetite
One of the first signs of pregnancy in dogs is a change in their appetite. During the first few weeks, your dog may not be as interested in her food, or she may eat more than usual. If your dog’s appetite changes suddenly, it could be a sign of pregnancy.
Weight Gain
In the later stages of pregnancy, you may notice your dog gaining weight. This is especially true in smaller breeds, who will often put on a few pounds during pregnancy. If your dog’s weight starts to slowly increase, it could be a sign that she is pregnant.
Changes in Behavior
Your dog may become more affectionate than usual during pregnancy. She may want to be close to you and may even try to cuddle up in your lap. She may also seem more tired than usual, sleeping more than she normally would. These are all normal signs of pregnancy in dogs.
Nesting Behavior
As your dog’s due date approaches, she may start to show nesting behavior. This could include her trying to find a quiet, dark place to sleep, such as under the bed or in a closet. She may also start to gather items, such as blankets and towels, and move them to her chosen spot. This is a sign that your dog is getting ready to have her puppies.
Checking for a Larger Abdomen
As your dog’s pregnancy progresses, you will be able to feel her abdomen getting larger. You should be able to feel the puppies moving inside her when you gently press your hand against her stomach. As the puppies get bigger, you may even be able to count them by feeling them through the wall of her abdomen.
Vaginal Discharge
A few weeks before your dog is due to give birth, she may start to have a clear or bloody discharge from her vagina. This is a sign that the puppies are getting ready to be born.
Getting Veterinary Care
Even if you are able to recognize the signs of pregnancy in your dog, it is important to take her to the vet to confirm the pregnancy and receive proper medical care. Your vet will be able to advise you on how to care for your dog during pregnancy, as well as when and how to prepare for the birth of the puppies.
