The first step you should take is to call your veterinarian and arrange for an appointment to get your cat checked out. It is important to determine if your cat is really pregnant, as there are other possibilities that could explain her behavior and weight gain.
What the Vet Will Do
At the vet appointment, the vet will take your cat's temperature, listen to her heart and lungs, and feel her abdomen. This will help to determine if your cat is pregnant or if her signs and symptoms are due to a different condition.
Ultrasound
The vet may also suggest that your cat have an ultrasound to determine if she is pregnant. Ultrasound can detect pregnancy in cats starting at about 15 days after conception. The number of kittens that may be present can be seen by ultrasound as early as 28 days.
X-ray
Your vet may also suggest an x-ray to confirm the pregnancy. X-rays can detect pregnancy in cats as early as 45 days. X-rays are a great way to determine the number of kittens your cat is carrying, as each fetus can be seen as a separate image.
Weight Gain
Weight gain is one of the most common signs of pregnancy in cats. Your cat may become noticeably heavier or rounder in the abdomen during the last three weeks of the pregnancy. This is due to the growth of the fetuses and the increased fluid in the abdomen.
Nesting Behavior
Your cat may also start displaying nesting behavior. This is where your cat will start searching for a safe, quiet place to have her kittens. Your cat may also start carrying her toys and bedding around in her mouth to her chosen nesting spot.
Time To Prepare
If you can confirm that your cat is pregnant, then it is time to get ready for the arrival of her kittens! Make sure you have a warm, quiet place for your cat to have her kittens, and provide her with plenty of food and water. Additionally, make sure your cat is up to date on her vaccinations and that she has been dewormed.
